Please see attached the Jefferson County Master Gardeners Association Monthly Newsletter. It is very lenghty but contains a wonderful amount of information. It would be great if we could provide some of the same experiences and information to the Shelby County master Gardeners. It seems to be that this group(JCMG) has a great deal of community support, both from private Individuals and from Garden Related Businesses. Rodney, our President, has put a great deal of emphasis on this apporach and it is great. If anyone has ideas on this subject, please put them in the comment section on our blog. We need input!

Hello Master Gardeners...
It is hard to believe that November is here and winter is just a short time away. Our Holiday Graduation/Recognition Dinner will be here before we know it. I hope everyone is planning on attending! We will be introducing the new Officers for 2012 and announcing the winners of our three awards.
Before that, however, you, the entire membership, will need to do your part. For the three awards, you will need to vote for the nominee of your choice. (Please see the article below.) The awards are: the Donna Michael Award, Ralph Archer Award, & Denise Peterson Award. We will be voting by secret ballot for these awards at our November general meeting. If you are unable to come to the meeting, you will be able to vote via email. Cheri Casey, Chair of the Membership Committee, will tally our votes and the winners will be announced at the Holiday Dinner on December 6.
We will also be voting for our officers for 2012 at our November meeting. The Nominating Committee will present their slate of officers. If you have someone you would like to nominate, you may do so at the November meeting. You must have the permission of the person you are nominating before that meeting.
So, as you can see, our November meeting will be a very important one to attend. I hope to see you there.
I would like to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving! November is a special month that reminds us to be grateful for all that we have, family, friends, freedom, water to drink, food to eat, the air to breathe, our homes to give us shelter, our soil to give us gardens......... We really do have oh so much to be thankful!

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH
Our volunteers for the month of November are the LNC Sensory Garden Group who recently had a herb luncheon as a fundraiser for the garden. This group of MGs & Interns consist of Kathy Morris, Linda Guss, Rosetta Fackler, Elizabeth Barrouquere, Trilba Smith, Janie Kanzler, Marie Broadhurst and Beth Burke. Denise Peterson also joined the group for this event as well as Lauren Barrouquere.
These ladies raised $224 for the Sensory Garden!

INTERN OF THE MONTH!
Dan Ochs is our Intern of the Month! Dan has volunteered at the Whitehall Perennial Garden and he is on our Community Education Committee. Dan helped at the Winter Lecture Series also. He enjoyed giving a program at a Neighborhood Association on "What's Right With Your Garden?" After the presentation they toured the host's garden and pointed out those principles as they came upon them.
Dan has about 50 varieties of day lilies & hostas and about 20 varieties of heuchera. He was a consulting rosarian for several years and had about 100 varieties of roses, but the deer and Japanese beetles ran him out of the rose business!
Dan likes to fish and used to fish in bass tournaments and was pretty successful! The last year he fished 9 tournaments and was in the top 3 in 6 of them with 2 firsts! Dan goes to Alaska each year to fly fish for salmon, taking his camera with him, since he enjoys dabbling in photography of wildlife.
Thanks Dan for everything you do for us!

Welcome Neil!
The Extension office has a new Horticulture Technician, Neil Wilson. Neil graduated from St. X High School and then U of K, with a B.S. in Natural Resource Conservation & Management.
Most of Neil's work experience has been in landscaping and natural area restoration. Before coming to JCES he worked at the UK Horticultural Research Farm in Lexington. He assisted with the 180 member Community Supported Agriculture Program. The farm is certified organic and provides produce 25 weeks of the year to 180 people.
His personal gardening interests are in native plants in the landscape and vegetable production. He likes to see locally sourced and reclaimed wood & stone adaptively re-used in the landscape.
We wish Neil the best of luck in his new position!
Dues for JCMGA
The Membership Committee wants everyone to know that, at the September General Meeting, the membership voted on changing the dues to $15. However, there will be a discount of $3 if you turn your dues in to the Treasurer Patti Van Cleave by the due date of January 31. You may pay your dues at our Holiday Dinner at Whitehall on December 6th or at any of our general meetings. You may also mail them to

HERB LUNCHEON
A FEAST FOR THE SENSES

As we arrived at the Nature Center we noticed a flurry of activity in the Sensory Garden as the Boy Scouts were busily working there, preparing beds and paths. As we entered the building, the excitement continued to build as we were enveloped by tantalizing aromas and greeted by a troop of smiling and bustling Betty Crockers and June Cleavers. Oh, wait! They were Master Gardeners! ...And we realized we were about to experience something really special!
Our smiling hostesses (including the illustrious Denise Peterson) were decked out in outfits that featured vintage aprons and herb corsages. We were led to our seats and offered our choice of water, tea, or rosemary lemonade. The tables were adorned with lovely vintage tablelcloths and herb centerpieces. We marveled at all of the goodies that were already on the tables, including fresh salsa, tortilla chips, herb butter, and bags of pickling spices with recipes attached ready for us to take home.
Then the real show started. The menu was explained and we were encouraged to try everything!

The consensus of the attendees was that everything was absolutely wonderful. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, the presentations were interesting and informative, And it was so much fun! But before everyone could go home fabulous door prizes, including plates donated by Hadley Pottery, were given out. Each participant was sent home with many goodies, including a booklet containing recipes of all the dishes that were served and a packet of basil seeds donated by Bunton Seed.
The luncheon was truly a feast for the senses in every way, which was totally appropriate since it was a fundraiser for the LNC's Sensory Garden. This group of MGs, who also donated all of the food and supplies, should be commended for putting on a very creative and enjoyable learning experience. And it was pretty apparent that they had a blast doing it.

BOOKS AND TECHIE INFO
Rita Pelczar in her column "Green Garage" in the September/October '11 issue of THE AMERICAN GARDENER, caught my attention. Each year I promise myself that I will remember all about my garden--plant names and cultivars, when I planted each, what it requires to thrive etc. etc. etc. Ah yes, the best laid plans! Ms Pelczar listed three systems for gardening record-keeping. Though I must confess I don't have experience with any of them, I fully intend to investigate them, and thought perhaps you might also be interested. The GARDENSCRIBE PLANT ORGANIZER (www.gardenscribe.com) is a 3-ring binder with "Plant Detail" pages that allow for entering all pertinant info. The MOLESKINE GARDENING JOURNAL (www.moleskine.com) is less detailed but more compact. It is divided into sections: plants; pots and tools; design, etc. GARDEN TRACKER (www.gardentracker.com) is a computer based system that helps with organization of records, and allows additions of photos etc. so that you can track your plants/garden over the years.
RAIN BARRELS AND COMPOST BINS
Help the environment and support the Louisville Nature Center, 3745 Illinois Ave. by purchasing a rain barrel or compost bin. The rain barrels are $74 ($69 for 2 or more) and compost bins are $85. Rain barrels with diverters are $105. You can stop by and see the display in their lobby and all prices include tax. The Louisville Nature Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide nature education and encourage stewardship in an urban forest.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
FRESH SALSA
3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
2 small cloves garlic, minced
3 large ripe tomatoes, peeled and seeds removed, chopped
2 hot chili peppers, Serrano or Jalapeno, finely chopped (optional)
2 to 3 tablespoons minced cilantro
1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons lime juice
Salt & pepper to taste
Preparation:
Put chopped onion and garlic in a strainer, and pour 2 cups boiling water over them, then let drain thoroughly and cool. Discard water. Combine onions and garlic with chopped tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, lime juice, salt & pepper. Refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours to blend flavors. Makes 2 cups of salsa.
